Holistic Psychology - Treating Mind, Body And Spirit

If we think in terms of holistic anything and including holistic psychology, we might consider the much used and much abused term of mind, body and spirit.

People seem to have an unfortunate propensity to break up reality into smaller and smaller pieces in the wrongful idea that if you understand all the pieces, you get understand the whole; this is however not going to happen as in any system, the total equals far more than the sum of its parts.

You cannot understand a living frog in the context of its environment and its effects on the food chain above and below by studying its organs, skin, eyes, behaviour and bones separately.

Likewise, the human totality doesn't make any sense if you split it up into mind, body and spirit.

Only when we put all of them back together do we get a semblance of reality, and then, we might be in a position to do something with that reality, change it perhaps, or even attempt to evolve it.

The term holistic psychology is actually an oxymoron, as psychology means the study of the mind; but the thought behind it is a fair one, namely the idea that in holistic psychology not just the mind is addressed, but the mind in the context of the body AND the spirit as well.

I am going to discuss Events Psychology as an example of a spiritual psychology on another occasion; here, we are going to look at the holistic psychology aspects of Events Psychology.

The holistic psychology is easily found in the core of the Events Psychology treatment, namely the Events Story that leads us to the Event Absolute.

The events story is a version told of the memory of an event and surrounds the event absolute which is inside the events story, much as a kernel is inside a peach.

Spirit, Body, Mind Involvement In Events

A person may say tell a story of a memory there was a day, some 20 years ago, when they were playing with their brothers outside in the snow, and they were having a good time, when all of a sudden, there was screaming and when the person turned around they saw lots and lots of bright red blood on the snow and their youngest brother holding his face with both hands. The person thought the brother was going to die, and then that it was all their fault because they were the oldest; they had no idea of what had happened and described their reaction as "feeling the ground drop away and falling". They then thought (metacommented) that "I failed my brother", "my parents are going to kill me for this," and that "God will never forgive me."

If we look at the structure of this events story, we discover it has exactly the same progression as all events stories.

  • We start in a certain time, a certain location; something happens;
  • the person experiences a (never before felt, unique) physical sensation - the event absolute -
  • and then goes on to make the so called metacomments which in this moment and close to the event absolute become powerful post hypnotic suggestions and are the genesis of life long beliefs, values and attitudes.

What is extremely to note in the context of describing Events Psychology as a holistic psychology is that the event absolute IS A BODY SENSATION.

The meta comments are of the mind, of the conscious mind, if you will; and a person will likely carry away thoughts and emotions as a result of the event which will seem as a strictly psychological disorder as there seems to be no physical component to their disturbed states of mind and emotion; but the event absolute starts in the body and is a BODY EXPERIENCE in the first place.

Please note that this holds true for all forms of events, including enlightenment events (Guiding Stars) and trauma events.

The moment of CHANGE is the event absolute, when something happens to the person that is felt in the body.

What this something is brings in the spiritual psychology aspect of Events Psychology - the event has happened in the person's energy system.

So here we have a true holistic progression of an event.

The Holistic Psychology Progression In Events Memories

The person notices something in consciousness.

The energy body reacts with a powerful change reaction.

This change reaction creates noticeable body sensations.

The conscious mind will then go ahead and form the meta comments based on this experience.

The meta comments become powerful post hypnotic suggestions which will from that moment forth influence the person's mind, body and spirit.

The Holistic Psychology Treatment In Events Psychology

It is absolutely pre-supposed in Events Psychology theory that a person is a holistic mind/body/spirit PLUS totality.

This being so, changing ANY aspect of this totality will change the entire totality, and so in Events Psychology you can choose whether you want to ...

- evolve, treat, deal with the original movement in the energy body that is the event absolute;

- evolve, treat, heal the body sensations or emotions related to the event absolute;

- evolve, treat, heal the metacomments related to the event absolute.

The first treats the "spirit" (energy system); the second treats the body; the third treats the mind.

Treatment approaches for the first include energy psychology and direct energy work including Reiki and EMO; the second includes movement therapy and healing hands massage approaches; the third general psychology approaches involving consideration, reflection, talking and thought.

The real leverage point in Events Psychology is of course, the event absolute; but even if the principles of holistic psychology are used in Events Psychology by someone who doesn't "believe" in the existence of the human spirit or energy system (!) and they treat the body sensations and the metacomments instead, considerable progress and evolution in the problem groups that came to be as a direct result of the event absolute can be expected.

A Practical Holistic Psychology For The 21st Century

To sum up, Events Psychology is a truly holistic psychology in a very practical and down to Earth sense, that allows anyone to choose which of the mind/body/spirit approaches they wish to employ to bring about evolution and healing to their own or another person's events.

It makes healing events possible and achievable and allows a person to evolve beyond the events of their lives, opening the door for new experiences.

Events Psychology also takes the concept of holistic psychology and makes it not just real, but simple, straightforward and most of all useful for both practitioners and clients alike.
